Most doctors will not recommend you get involved with any of the popular fad diets. Why are they bad when so many people get results from doing them? Well, most fad diets fail to set you up for realistic life long weight loss. They focus solely on the here and now and not the long-term goal you have in mind. Put simply, they are a quick fix.
If so many people take part in fad diets why are they bad? Well, in general fad diets are very restrictive. They require you to not eat any of a certain food group or restrict you to one food group entirely. When you think about this logically, it doesn't make sense long-term.
For instance, if you lose 20 pounds eating cabbage soup, will you eat cabbage soup for the rest of your life to maintain that weight loss? The answer to this question is invariably no. You will go back to your normal eating habits and have learned no new eating habits that will prevent you from gaining that 20 pounds back.
Nutrition is the primary reason why doctors want people to stay away from fad diets. Why are they bad when it comes to nutrition? Fad diets don't teach people good nutritional habits. In fact, some fad diets don't even teach people portion control. The best diet is one that teaches you how to eat the right amount of the right foods. Essentially, it would not be a diet, but a way of life. You wouldn't lose 20 pounds and stop the program. You make small adjustments in food allowances along the way, but the basic principles stay the same.
Yo-yo weight loss is another reason why doctors don't endorse fad diets. Why are they bad for maintaining weight loss? When people lose weight by participating in fad diets they tend to stop the fad diet when they reach their goal weight. After all, fad diets are often extreme and they limit your food intake to one item or one food category. For instance, one fad diet has people eat a diet primarily of cabbage soup. Another limits your food intake primarily to grapefruit. The list goes on, there are fad diets for cookies, lemonade, and even ice cream.
Regaining weight is not uncommon with fad diets. Why are they bad for keeping weight off? If you look at the general idea of most fad diets they seem okay. You do something radical for a brief period of time and you reap big rewards. Advocates of fad diets would say that the weight loss boost you get from these diets should be parleyed into a better overall diet once you finish the fad diet. However, in 99% of people who do fad diets this simply isn't the case.
The only way to lose weight and keep it off is to learn new habits. This means you need to find a diet that promotes healthy eating and increased activity. With diet and exercise you can really lose weight and keep it off. It may not be a quick fix fad, but it works!
